Reimel Family Line Part II / Edit I

Previously I had put up the Reimel Family Line Part I outline, beginning with John George (called George) Reimel. I have been able trace the Reimel family back to 1610. I did this with a combo of adding "family tree hints" from Ancestry.com and doing other internet searches to make sure everything matched up. I have since found that the "family tree matches" need to be taken with a grain of salt. I will talk about that later. I will post the info that I have so far found in outline style. My direct lines in bold. I welcome any possible corrections and/or additions. Notes in bullet points. I am still working on this family. This is not the final edition of this outline. I am trying to focus on my direct line. I hope to add more information. As soon as I find enough information, I will write up a new edition ASAP. If I have time, I will try to add info for the distant family.

1. George Reimel b. 1610 m. Maragreth Ziller July 3, 1641 d. Jan 1, 1661

Born in Hüttendorf, Erlangen, Bayern, Germany. Married in Bouxwiller, Germany. Died in Niedermodern, Alsace, Holy Roman Empire. In searching, I would sometimes find Niedermodern, Alsace located in France. Other times it would be located in Germany. Wanting to find which country it was and knowing that Reimel is a German name, I did an online search to see which country it was really located in. I found quite a bit of info on Wikipedia. Basically, it was a territory between France and Germany. Throughout the centuries, France and Germany fought over who would over rule Alsace. She has been under many rulerships. I have decided to add the ruling party as the country, depending on the date of said ancestors.

1.3.1. Hans George Reimel b. Feb 12, 1683 m. Anna Barbara Diemer Aug 1, 1704 d. 1774

This is the first Reimel ancestor to arrive in America, with his wife and children who had already been born in Alsace. Born in Pfaffenhoffen, Alsace, Kingdom of France. Married in Pfaffenhoffen, Alsace, Kingdom of France. Now there seems to be a bit of a discrepancy as to who is wife is and what her name was, and when the marriage took place. There is an Elizabeth Viet that I find on occasion as his wife. But this woman actually died before the marriage date, so that would not make sense. What needs to be found, is something mentioning the wife being named while living in America. The George Reimel family departed Europe from Rotterdam, Netherlands. Ship name was Virtuous Grace, captained by John Bull. I am guessing this was in the beginning of 1737. They arrived in Pennsylvania on Sept 24, 1737. I have also found two possible places for his death. One as being in Virginia or Maryland. Second is Williams, Northampton Co. Pennsylvania, USA.

I think George Reimel's second wife may have given birth to two more of his children. Not sure though. I found names of children who are buried in Upper Mount Bethel. One of the children is mentioned as a daughter to a George and Sarah Reimel.

Maiden Name for Maria Reimel is Schoch

In the beginning (pun intended), I had mentioned that I was unsure of the maiden name for Maria, wife of Henry G. Reimel. First, I had Googled Michael Reimel, grandfather for my maternal grandmother. I came across search result for a page in Google Books; The History of the Borneman Family in America, written by Amos Borneman. Partial text for the search result was, "6 Michael Reimel, twins, 22. 6 Sarah Ackerman, family. 6 Norah Houck, 25. 6 Wm. G. Reimel, twins, 22. 6 Michael Reimel, twins, 22. 6 Sarah Ackerman family. ..." Seeing the words twins and the names of Wm. G. Reimel and Michael Reimel being the twins mentioned peaked my curiosity. As y'all will recall, I had mentioned that my gg grandfather had a twin brother named William G. I clicked the link. Came across this partial text;

Well, wouldn't ya know it. I was unable to copy/paste the way I viewed. I will try to make sense out of this for ya. I highlighted those in my direct line. The numbers in front of the names are the generations down from the first person in the book. That person is a male Borneman. I am working on how to connect to Borneman Family. I will post those results soon. Numbers after the names are there ages. Through searching about this book, I found that Amos Borneman started writing the book in 1878. He passed away before the book was published in 1881. Considering that the book was started in 1878, that would mean that Michael Reimel in the book was age 22 in 1878. My Michael Reimel, and his twin brother, would have been age 22 at the time. When reading this, I saw that there mother's name was Maria. I had already known that Michael and William G.'s mother was named Maria. I figured that the chances would be very low of a woman named Maria would marry a Reimel man and have twin sons with the same names as those in my family. But still, I did not know for sure what the maiden name for the Maria in my family was. So I made a note of this book. If you would like to read the page 79 book of this book link here. From there, you can type in whatever you may be looking for in the search box, even read the full book.

Through a "hints search" on Ancestry.com I found a page for The Ackerman Family Association which mentioned the following partial text;

The next page tells of what happened to Abraham Ackerman and the descendants of Abraham and Sarah Jane Reimel Ackerman. You do need to have a subscription to Ancestry.com to be able to view. If you don't have a subscription, you can Google the book and find info.
I knew that Sarah Jane Reimel was the daughter of Henry G. Reimel and sister of Michael Reimel. With this information added to the above info, plus reading that Sarah died in Michigan, I knew that I was onto something. The death date for Sarah would have been about the time that Michael and Catherine/Katherine Shoemaker Reimel were in Michigan. I know this because the draft card for my maternal grandmother's uncle, Frank Reimel, stated that he was born in Orion, Michigan in 1888. I asked my sweet little granny, who will be 84, to send my cousins up to the courthouse in Corunna , Shiawasee Co., Michigan to pick up the death certificates for Michael and Catherine Shoemaker Reimel. So as that I would be able to find out for sure maiden name of Michael Reimel's mother. My grandma asked why I wanted my cousins to pick up the certificate. I told her that because she is getting older, she prolly shouldn't drive out to Corunna just to pick up some certificates. Uh-oh! She said that she isn't that old and she can drive out there. After picking up the certificates, she sent them to me. Michael's cert. stated that his mother's maiden name was Maria Shook. Considering that it would be too much of a coincidence for a Maria Shook and a Maria Schoch both be married to Henry Reimels and both have twin sons of the same names and ages in the same town, this must be the same Maria Schoch that I had found, just a mis-spelling. Now if it was a totally different last name, that would have been a different story.
I have been able to find more information on the Schoch side. I will get into that later. Maria has been mentioned as full name of Anna Maria Schoch b. June 16, 1828. Her parents were Michael b. August 9, 1791 d. May 9, 1875 and Elizabeth Ratzell b. April 3, 1794 d. Nov. 9, 1845. Originally, I had wanted to focus on the Kallis and Selinger family, from my full maternal line, but I have not been able to get farther than the info that I have already posted here. So for now I am focusing on the Reimel side.

Reimel Family Line Part I / Edit I

This is the Reimel outline from the email I sent to the Reimel cousin. I have since found new information, that I will add later on. As for now, here is the first outline I wrote up. Living persons have been deleted. My direct line is in bold lettering. Stories and notes are in bullet points. This is not set in stone. I welcome any additions or corrections. I found him in censuses living in Upper Mount Bethel. Later in life, he was living with his son, Henry G. Somehow, I think his great grandfather may be Hans George Reimel of Germany, who resided in Upper Mount Bethel, Pennsylania. Hans George came to the United States in the early 1700's. But not sure how to connect the two. I have since been able to connect George to Hans George. George Reimel was born as John George, but censuses have him named as George, so I am assuming this is what he wanted to be called.

He resided in Upper Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania. I believe, through internet searches, Maria's maiden name was Schock. If I am correct, her father was Michael Schock. I have since found out that her maiden name is Schoch. Her birth name was Anna Maria. I will write up a post on that later.

I knew that he was a twin and was born in Pennsylvania but did not know his twin's name. I had searched for Reimel families with twin sons in different censuses, one being Michael. That is how I found out that his parents were Henry G. and Maria. The first census, and only, census I found with twins in 1860 census, in Upper Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania, was the above family of Henry G. and Maria. I have been told that Katherine may have been a twin also, but no confirmation either way. I can not seem to find information for Michael and Katherine as a couple in the 1880 census. Died in Durand, MI. Interred with wife, at the family mausoleum at Yerian Cemetery in Vernon, Michigan.

Born in Vernon Twp., Michigan, according to his draft card (never served). I think, maybe, William and Dorothy married to avoid being drafted. Officiating pastor was Rev. D. Idle. Not sure what church, if any, they were married at. Their marriage license has witnesses as Donald Shenk and Mrs. D. Idle. It looks as though she was the officiating pastor's wife. William and Dorothy resided at and raised their children at the farm on Reimel Rd. Died at the farm in Lennon, Michigan

This was "Uncle Tub." He was named after Grandma B's maiden name. Most likely the H. initial stands for Henry? He was born on the farm on Reimel Rd. Died in Durand.

1.3.1.3.5.3.2.4..4.6. Jerry Keith Reimel b. June 1937 m. "living person" d. Feb. 18, 1994

First child of William Henry and Dorothy Elizabeth Nelson Reimel to be born at Owosso Memorial Hospital. The other children were midwifed by a woman who lived in the woods across from the farm. Somewhere my grandmother has a picture where the older kids were outside of the hospital and Grandma B. is at the window holding up Jerry.

Kallis and Selinger Line

I haven't kept this blog up like I should. I have found quite a bit of information about the Reimel line, which I will talk about my new findings soon. For right now I will post the outline of the Kallis and Selingers lines I had sent to my Reimel cousin, who also shares the same Kallis ancestry. For obvious reasons I am living out living persons. My direct line is in bold letters. Notes and stories are in bullet points. Grandma B. is Dorothy Nelson Reimel Behnke. The following info is not set in stone. I hope to find more info to add, along with possible corrections. So keep checking and I always welcome any input.

1. Josef Kališ m. Elizabeth d. June 18, 1850

Like I had said before, the correct spelling for the Kallis name is Kališ. I am not quite sure of Frank Kallis' father's name. I am using this as an educated guess. Since the family in Nosálov that I have been in contact with has a long line of Josefs. "Living person" thinks that the mother's name was Elizabeth.

According to letter that "living person" has, Josef wrote a letter to Frank in 1850. In it, he writes that he has been traveling with a band for about a year and half, throughout Russia, Serbia and Turkey. I think it his descendants that are the people I had once been in contact. Now that I have started back to my Czech lessons, I will try to reconnect with them.

1.2. Frank Kallis b. 1826 m. Elizabeth Selinger d. Dec. 25, 1880

According to "living person", Frank Kallis came from a town called Nosálov, Bohemia. Supposedly him and his brother had planned to come to America together. But Frank ended up coming w/ Elizabeth. They ended up settling in Illinois, where Frank took on many jobs. "Living person" had said that at one point Frank was working as a bartender on weeknights and organ player at a Catholic Church during the weekends. Censuses have him also as a tenant type farmer. I have a pen-pal, not related, who is also into genealogy who told me that he saw in some book that he found a František Kališ and Josef Kališ who would be about the same age as our Frank Kallis, both living in Nosálov, Bohemia at the time Frank would have been living there.

Baby born on the way to America. Died at sea.

1.2.2. Joseph Kallis b. 1857 d. Dec. 28, 1903

Born somewhere in Illinois. Never married. He worked as a miner and a tenant type farmer. If the 1900 census I found for a boarder named Joseph Kallis outside of the Will and Grundy Counties is him, he also worked as a carpenter. "Living person's" family thinks he died somewhere near Morris, Illinois. Will County Death Records have him died in Will County and buried at Sand Ridge.

1.2.3. Henry Kallis b. Jan. 17, 1860 d. April 18, 1943

Born somewhere in Illinois. Never married. Died in Mitchell, South Dakota. In the Kallis family album, I have a picture of him with the picture card from a Hazeltines Studio in Baker City, Oregon. He looks dressed like a cowboy. Has one of those silk ties with a ring and then split to tuck each side under his blazer.

Born in Illinois. Married in Dakota Territory. Died in Anoka, Minnesota.

Born in Diamond, Illinois. Married in Wilmington, Illinois at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington with Rev. Thomas S. Anderson as officiating pastor. Reverend Anderson is listed on the marriage certificate as the pastor. I checked the pastor list at First Presbyterian in Wilmington. He was the pastor their at the time. So I would assume they got married in the church. Elizabeth died in Illinois. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery of Wilmington.

Born in Illinois. Married in Wilmington, Illinois. I am guessing at the Presbyterian Church. Died in Durand, Michigan.

Born in Illinois. He is the one who was developmentally disabled and was taken care of by Emma Nelson Shenk. Died in Durand, Michigan.

Born in Illinois. Married in Ohio. Died in Durand, Michigan. I believe all his children are still living.

Born in Illinois. I do not know anything more about him.

1.2.5.5. Dorothy Elizabeth Nelson b. July 26, 1900 m. William Henry Reimel April 3, 1918 d. July 5, 1995

Born in Wilmington, Illinois. Married in Owosso. I am unsure as to what, if any, church it was at. Marriage license states that the officiating pastor was D. (can't read his full first name) Idle. Considering that they were married soon after William's draft card was issued, along with the fact that witnesses listed are Donald Shenk and Mrs. D. Idle, I think they may have been married to keep him out of the war. I have a really neat recording of grandma B. talking about growing up that I will get into in another email, about the details. She passed away at Owosso Memorial Hospital, of a stroke, after having been living at an assisted living home in Swartz Creek, Michigan.

1.2.6. Emma Kallis b. Nov. 27, 1865 d. Dec. 23, 1933

Born in Morris, Illinois. Never married. This is the aunt of Grandma B. who worked as a cook at a hotel in Braidwood, Illinois. And Grandma B. would visit on the weekends. The story about the "gypsies" is true. Just the story kinda got carried away. We do not have gypsy ancestors. Emma did have friends who traveled about. They could have been anyone. True gypsies are Romany persons who originally came from India into Eastern and Central Europe. Her friends may have been circus freaks, miners going to wherever there was work, or anyone who went where there was work. My grandma has a few pictures of the people, they seemed pretty decently dressed. There was men and women. They would set up camp when in Braidwood. Emma would visit them at night and they would have a big bonfire. Grandma B. was not allowed to go see them. She would watch from her aunt's bedroom at the hotel. Interestingly, in the Kallis family album is a picture of a woman in very a very fancy dress, that was taken at the P. Schneider Studio in Chicago, Illinois. Another photo is of a woman in a fancy dress, also, at the Morele or Morsele City Gallery in Bloomington, Illinois. Both these women are dressed way fancier than Mrs. Oleson on Little House on the Prairie, even on her best days. I am wondering if they were actress friends of the family. I think the album came from Kate or Phoebe Powell when Grandma B. went to South Dakota with "living person" in the 60's. So I am not sure if they had a connection to Emma Kallis. When Grandma B. would have a baby she would come up to Michigan to help out at the farm. She usually stayed at the Shenk farm. My grandma insists that Emma died in Durand, Michigan, at Emma Nelson Shenk's farm. Supposedly she was there, bedridden. When she died they shipped the body (sounds kinda cold) to Illinois, where she is buried with Henry H. and Elizabeth Kallis Nelson at Oakwood Cemetery, Lot 43. But her death certificate is filed with Will County in Joliet, Illinois. The law is that wherever a person dies, that is where the death certificate is filed, regardless of where they are buried.

Born in Wilmington, Illinois. Never married. Died in Wessington Springs, South Dakota.

1.2.8. Anna Kallis b. Dec 3, 1869 m. Alex Vessey d. May 23, 1919

Born in Illinois. Was a school teacher. Married later in life. Moved to Tripp, South Dakota after marrying.

1.2.9. Charles Kallis b. Oct. 26, 1870 d. May 4 1925

Born in Morris, Illinois. Never married. Lived in St. Paul, Minnesota for most of his life. I am assuming this is also where he died.

1.2.10 Jennie Kallis b. 1872 d. Mar. 25, 1962

Born near Morris, Illinois. Never married. Died in Wessington Springs, South Dakota.

1.2.11 Frank Kallis b. Nov. 11, 1875 m. Minnie Seymour Jan. 1900 d. April 4, 1948

Born near Braidwood, Illinois. At some point he divorced Minnie. I think this would have been before 1920, as the Pleasant, South Dakota census has him living with the Kallis family, listed as single. Uncle "living person" remembers him stopping by the farm, when "living person" was a kid. Never invited. Never gave an announcement. Just showed up. I guess he would travel around a lot. Uncle "living person" recalls him talking about using "buffalo chips" as fuel for the fire. I think uncle "living person" said that Frank worked as a cowboy.

1.2.11.1 Frank J. Kallis

I am not sure, but I would guess he was born around 1901-1903. According to "living person", Frank lived in Washington State. I have seen a few multiple generations of Frank J. Kallis' living in Pennsylvania, during searches. Not sure if this is related to us.

1.2.12. Albert Kallis b. 1877 m. Mary Freese

Born near Braidwood, Illinois. Had one son. No grandchildren.

All of the Kallis children, with the exception of Joseph, Elizabeth and Emma are buried with their mother at Hope Cemetery, 10 miles west of Wessington Springs, South Dakota. Frank Kallis Sr. is said to be buried in a small country cemetery outside of Wilmington, Illinois. But no one knows where.

Now onto the Selinger line;

1. Anton Selinger m. Lena

"Living person" said that the mother of Elizabeth Selinger Kallis was named Lena. I found the 1880 census she was living with the Kallis family in Wilmington, Illinois, as a widow. She was born about 1802. In the census, her given name is spelled as Ellen. Last name as "Selezer." But that could have just been a mistake by the census taker, or the person he talked to. It could have been a neighbor he talked to if no one was at the Kallis home, or one of the Kallis children. Henry and Elizabeth Kallis Nelson's marriage license has "bride's mother's maiden name" as Seliger. So any of these arrays of surnames could be correct. Also, as to Lena's given name, I can not rule out Czech and German variations of the name; such as Lenka, Helena or Magdalena. Most likely, she died in Illinois and is buried there. "Living person" said that the name of the father of Elizabeth Selinger Kallis being Anton is not for sure, but most likely.

1.2. Elizabeth Selinger b. May 5, 1835 m. Frank Kallis d. April 4, 1919

Born in Bohemia. I am guessing that since her brother lived in Mšeno, she was probably born there also. It is not far from Frank's hometown. Grandma B. thought that her grandmother had been dead most of her life. There was some sort of family feud. Grandma B. remembers when she was little asking her sister about their grandmother. Emma told her sternly, "Your grandmother is dead! Now don't ask me again." Not sure what was up with that. I have found through census searches that her cousins, Kate and Phoebe Powell, were living with the grandmother, along with many of the aunts and uncles at the time. Yet, Phoebe would come to visit Illinois. So somehow the pieces need to be put together, once all found. "Living person" also said that Elizabeth refused to leave the farmhouse and speak English while living in South Dakota. Censuses state that she spoke German. She died in Wessington Springs, South Dakota.

A Few Snippets about Henry Nelson

I guess this could be part of the Lunch with Grandma Behnke series. I am going to talk about some of the combined stories about Henry Nelson as told to me by my mother and great grandmother, and even a few quickies from my grandmother's brother. From what I have heard, I have already stated that the correct spelling of his surname is Nielsen. My mother told me that Ruth Prudence Finney Nelson, wife of Charles Nelson told her that the reason for him changing the spelling of his surname is that when first residing in Illinois, there were many Nielsens living in the town or block and would receive other people's mail or they would receive his mail.
Henry came to the United States with a brother. My mother thinks that the brother's name may have been Thomas. Henry was about sixteen years old, his brother about eighteen. Now here is where things get fuzzy; Supposedly the reason for the young men to travel to the New World is that the brother was about to be drafted into the military, had they stayed in Denmark. My mother has said that Grandma Behnke told her that when arriving in New York the two brother's became separated in the crowd. Not being able to speak English at the time, it was difficult for them to be able to ask the people around for help finding each other. Grandma Behnke also told me this story.
Yet, Ruth Nelson told my mother that the two brothers did to make it to Illinois together. Once in Illinois they had a falling out. Supposedly the brother wanted to "Go West Young Man!". For whatever reasons, Henry wanted to stay in Illinois.
I would love to find descendants of this brother, who may also be doing research on the family and see if they have been able to trace family information in Denmark. Like I had mentioned, the father of Henry Nelson was Niels Powelson. I am not sure of his mother's name, as Henry did not report her name on his and Lizzie Kallis' marriage license, from April 21, 1890. I wondered why and asked out loud to my mother. She said that Grandma Behnke told her that Henry's mother died when he was a small child. He had a step-mother that he did not like. Without knowing the mother's name, the search into Denmark becomes rather difficult as there were probably many Niels Powelsons in Denmark who had a son named Henry. As for Henry's brother, he could have changed his surname to Nelson, kept the Nielsen spelling or even another possibility is using the father's surname of Powelson.

While in Illinois Henry worked as a dreyman where he would have a team of horses, pick up freight at the train depot. From there he would deliver the items to the local merchants. He had also done some beer delivery. Supposedly, he had been asked by Anheuser-Busch to drive for them, like those horses ya see on the Budweiser commercials at Christmastime. Henry declined the offer, as he chose to keep the family living in Illinois.
Henry's wife, Elizabeth, had been suffering from TB in 1909. This was in the days that people with TB were told that the best thing was to get fresh air. When Elizabeth wasn't feeling well Henry would call up Elizabeth's sister, Emma Kallis, who was a cook at a hotel in Braidwood, where she would come into Wilmington to look after the kids, so that he could take Elizabeth for a buggy ride and go on a picnic. Elizabeth eventually passed away in June of 1909. Henry seemed to have taken this hard. He would spend much time at the saloon.
After Emma Nelson, oldest daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Kallis Nelson, married Donald Shenk in 1911 in Illinois, the family moved into the Shenk farm in Illinois. At some point, Donald Shenk bought a farm in Durand, Michigan. Eventually the Nelson followed them and they moved to Durand in 1914.

I had talked to one of my grandmother's brothers. He remembered his grandfather fondly. Henry lived at the Shenk farm the entire time he lived in Durand. I guess Henry still had a bit of an accent. So growing up the kids would try to get him to say thirty-third. Which from Henry sounded like "tirdy-turd." He also recalled that Henry loved his beer and Limburger cheese. Henry had the cheese in a barrel in the basement of the Shenk farm. He was not allowed to eat it upstairs, as it was very pungent.
Henry passed away in Durand, Michigan on April 15, 1929. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Wilmington, Illinois, Lot 43.

Lunch with Grandma Behnke

While mainly I want to post on research findings in my genealogy searching, part of researching is stories as told by the older persons in the family. I am thankful for the times I went with my grandmother to take her mother to lunch. Since my parents were divorced and my mother had to work I spent a lot of time with my grandparents after school. When my grandmother would go to visit her mother and mother's second husband, Edwin Behnke, she would take me along. Sometimes she would take her to the cemetery or just shopping. Afterwards, she would take her to lunch, in Durand or Vernon/Corunna area. One of the restaurants I recall well is that little restaurant on the corner by Carters Grocery Plaza, just on the other side of the railroad tracks. I can't remember the name of it. There's a bank there now. Sometimes my mother would visit Grandma Behnke on Saturdays. Mom didn't usually take her to lunch. She knew Grandma Behnke wouldn't let her pay and my mom didn't want her to pay either, so we would just visit her in her house.
I remember she used to always have gum in her purse. When I was little I was not allowed to chew gum. I recall whispering in her ear asking for a piece of gum. She would always give me a piece of gum. Whether we were visiting her at her house or at lunch, many times she would talk about growing up in Illinois and/or family that she would talk to on the Nelson side. She never revealed too much about growing up. But would reveal little bits and pieces. In her house she had a box of old photos on her stair steps that she had shown us a few times. A couple that I recall asking to see when I would come over was of her and her youngest brother Carl Nelson, one was with her and her cousin Phoebe Powell (daughter of Mortimer and Mary Kallis Powell), another was a really neat photo of her aunt Emma Kallis where Emma had her back to the camera and her long hair was let down. The photo of Emma was really neat. Her hair was down to her ankles and she was wearing this curve hugging dress that belled out at the bottom and had bell sleeves.
Anyways, besides documented research that I find, I will also be sharing stories that have been told to me by the older people in the family. So consider it having lunch with me. These will be short quick posts.

I Made a Reimel Cousin Connection!/CORRECTION!

Granted my focus is on the Nelson, Kallis and Selinger line. But currently, I am at a stand still on that line. So I am focusing on the Reimel side, for now. I have the Reimel side on my family tree at Ancestry.com. I had posted a few queries to the community about the Reimel family. An Ancestry.com member posted a response to my query. He is a nephew of my maternal grandmother. I just love the internet, how relatives who have never met and relatives who have lost contact can connect through genealogy based sites! He also emailed me the posted photos of plaques for Michael (left) and Katherine (right) at the Reimel family mausoleum in the cemetery in Vernon, Michigan. The Reimel cousin also stated that three others in the mausoleum are Michael and Katherine's daughter Mary, son Frank and his wife Della. I have already stated that my great grandmother was Dorothy Elizabeth Nelson Reimel Behnke and that she married William Reimel. I do not know too much about the Reimel family. I will state what I know from a combination of family information and through Ancestry.com.

William Henry Reimel was born on June 12, 1893 in either Durand, Michigan or Pennsylvania. Censuses that I have found all state that he was born in Pennsylvania. His WWI Draft Card (never served) states that he was born in Durand. That is also where I found out his birth date. He was born to Michael and Katherine Shoemaker Reimel. He married Dorothy Elizabeth Nelson on April 3, 1918 in Owosso, Michigan. Officiating pastor was Reverend D. Gale. He died in 1949.

Michael Henry Reimel was born in 1856 in Pennsylvania, to Henry G. and Maria or Mariah (surname unknown) Reimel. He had a twin brother named William. He married Katherine Shoemaker about 1878. He died in 1929. Fortunately for the fact that I knew he was a twin, is the only way I was able to find him and his family via Upper Mount Bethel, Northampton County in Pennsylyvania censuses.

Katherine Shoemaker Reimel was born in 1857 in Pennsylvania and died in 1947. Since I do not know much about her or who her parents are, I have been unable to find info about her.

Henry G. Reimel was born about 1828 in Pennsylvania to George and Elizabeth (surname unknown) Reimel. I was fortunate enough to find find Henry's father living with Henry and Maria, as a widow, in the 1870 census.

Maria (unknown maiden name) Reimel was born about 1829.

George Reimel was born about 1795 in Pennsylvania. This is the farthest I have gotten in the Reimel family.

Elizabeth (unknown maiden name) Reimel was born about 1800.

Somehow, there is a connection to a Siebert family. My grandmother has an old woven wool red, white and blue blanket. I haven't seen it since I was a child. But I do recall that it had really pretty designs on it. My mother remembers seeing that whomever wove it put the name of Siebert on it. I can't recall the first name of the Siebert person. But I believe the year it was woven was 1810. And was woven in *Easton, Pennsylvania. So I would assume that Katherine Shoemaker Reimel's mother was a Siebert. Or Maria, Henry G.'s wife, was a Siebert. Or possibly Elizabeth, George's wife, was a Siebert.

*The original post had stated that the Siebert blanket was woven in Upper Mount Bethel. I have since talked to my mother. She says that the blanked was woven in Easton, Pennsylvania.

I have started a Flickr account so that I can put up a slideshow on the side bar of this blog. I guess I have to wait a few days before the feed from my account can show up. I will be adding photos from the Kallis family album given to me by my grandmother who got it from her mother. I have only posted pictures of identified persons. Most of these were taken in the Will and Grundy County areas. A few are from South Dakota. Most of the pictures from the album are unidentified persons and some really cute unidentified children. Sand Ridge in Grundy County

A couple posts ago I mentioned that Joseph Kallis, uncle to Dorothy Nelson Reimel Behnke, was buried in Sand Ridge. According to email exchanges with someone from Coal City Library she mentioned that there was a Sand Ridge in southern Illinois, but had not heard of a Sand Ridge in that area. In an unrelated search, I Googled "Towns in Grundy County." A search result showed a website that named the towns in Grundy County. One of the towns listed was Sand Ridge. I thought this may be a mistake, since I was told that Sand Ridge is in another county. So I Googled some more, "Sand Ridge in Grundy County Illinois." I found a map of Sand Ridge. It is located between Morris and Minooka, on the way to Joliet. I emailed the contact in Coal City, to give her the good news, and she gave me the email adress to someone at the Morris Library. Of course I have emailed this person. Praying to receive a positive answer with information about Frank Kallis and/or Lena Selinger.
According to Wikipedia Sand Ridge is unincorporated, and is in Aux Sable Township. It looks like there is not a cemetery called Sand Ridge Cemetery. The cemeteries listed are Aux Sable, Dresden and Saint Mary's. Details here.
I also put up a message on Ancestry.com asking about Sand Ridge. I received a reply. The messager says that there is a transcript of Aux Sable Cemetery available at Morris Library. I am not putting up all my bets on Frank and Lena being buried in Sand Ridge or the area. But this may look like a good lead, until I can find a yea or nay on this angle.

Cousin Connections

A few years ago I was able to connect with a distant cousin in South Dakota who is the great grandson of Mortimer and Mary Kallis Powell. I am very greatful to the information he has given about the Kallis family. I have been able to take the information he has given me and take it farther. I am still working on trying to find burial places on Frank Kallis and Lena Selinger (Frank's mother-in-law). And also I need to find death information on both. If I can find the death certificate for either Frank Kallis or Lena Selinger, I will be able to find the parent's names of both of them, along with other pertinent information.
Through Rod & Clan I have managed to find a very distant Czech cousin and her father. The father is married to a Kallis and still lives in Nosálov. Sadly, they only speak Czech and I have not kept up with my Czech lessons. So I have temporarily lost contact with them. I will be getting back to my Czech lessons and trying to reconnect with them. This family is somehow related to our Kallis family. They spell the surname as Kalis. I just need to find that missing link to figure out how they are related. The oldest Kalis ancestor they know of is a Josef
I also have managed to find a pen-pal through Lidé on Seznam, a Czech search engine like Yahoo. He is not related, but he is into genealogy and gave me a few pointers for searching Bohemian genealogy. He according to him, he found a František and Josef (pronounced Yosef) Kališ in Nosálov, who would be the same age around the same time as our Kallis family. So that is another person I need to reconnect with. Not really for the genealogy stuff, since he is not related, but he was a fun and cool person to talk to plus it helps me get in practice for when I finally do get to the Czech Republic. Look out Prague, here I come!

Even though Frank and Elizabeth Selinger Kallis had a total of twelve children, this figure includes little Maria who died at sea, there is only three of their children who have living descendants. Of course we know of Elizabeth Kallis marrying Henry Nelson (Nielsen) and Mary Kallis marrying Mortimer Powell. But Frank Kallis, the second youngest son of Frank and Elizabeth, married Minnie Seymour. According to the 1900 census in Lead City, Lawrence County, South Dakota they had been married for four months. Since the census was take in June, that would mean they were married in February of 1900. According to our Powell cousin in South Dakota, Frank and Minnie had a son named Frank J. Kallis. To our knowledge this was the only son. Our Powell cousin also says that Frank and Minnie divorced. The Powell cousin's family believes that Frank J. Kallis grew up in Washington state. I would love to find descendants of this cousin and exchange any knowledge I or they may have. Internet and Ancestry.com searches have shown quite a few multiple generations of Frank Kallises in Pennsylvania.

Some people are coming to this blog via searches for Reimel, Nelson, Kallis or Selinger names or combinations of the names. So I know there are cousins out there looking. I have found family trees on Ancestry.com that were entered by definite cousins. I have messaged some of those people. I don't mind if anyone uses any of this information that I have posted, for their personal family record. That's why I have posted it. I would love to hear from and connect with any of the family. Even those that I have never met. If you are able to take information I have given and go farther, please let me know what you have found. Calling up a Few Funeral Homes and Contacting Catholic Churches

Since the Kallis family was Catholic I emailed to someone at the Diocese of Joliet, in Illinois, who has to do with funerals and burials. I asked if they could tell me how I might be able to find information on burials of Catholic ancestors. He emailed back with a few phone numbers for funeral homes that would have been around at the time of Frank Kallis' death. He said that they sometimes have records dating back many generations.
I am also going to check to see if I can find info on Lena/Ellen/Helena Selinger/Seliger, since she was listed in the 1880 census with the Kallis family in Wilmington, Illinois. She was the mother Elizabether Selinger Kallis. Frank passed away on December 25, 1880. I am guessing that Lena would have passed away soon after Frank. I also assume that she passed away in Illinois. The majority of the family, minus Emma Kallis, Elizabeth Kallis (daughter) and Joseph Kallis moved to the Dakota Territories in about 1885. This was the year that Mary Kallis married Mortimer Powell. I doubt that they would have brought an old woman in her 80's out there with them back in those days.

I had asked the person that I contacted at the Coal City Library about how to find Catholic records. She said that I should try to contact some of the Catholic Churches in the area. She gave me link info to the Catholic church in Wilmington, Illinois. I am going to do all this stuff tomorrow, and through much prayer, I hope to find the information I need. Especially on Lena Selinger, her being the oldest ancestor on this side. She is the link to Bohemia.

Sand Ridge Cemetery/Burial Place of Joseph Kallis

Sorry I have not kept the blog updated on my research. I am still trying to find info on the deaths of Frank Kallis and Lena Selinger. I have come across information via Coal City public Library on the burial of Joseph Kallis, oldest uncle of my great grandmother Dorothy Nelson Reimel Behnke. From an email exchange from one of reference librarians;

The Kallis in the Necrology of Will County Pioneers 1902-1907 is Joseph Kallis.
His listing is under December 28, 1902 as follows:
Joseph Kallis, of Wilmington, aged 46 years. He was a native here.

We have a Will County Death Index book here that shows Joseph Kallis's place of death as Wilmington and cemetery location as Sand Ridge. The certificate number for this record is 10365 book # 176. These records should be available from the courthouse.

Another email exchange;

As for Sand Ridge, nobody around here recognizes that as being anwhere nearby. There seems to be a town named Sand Ridge in southern Illinois, but I do not know if that is what the record is referring to. Therefore, I don't know of any contacts to find out if Frank Kallis or other relatives are buried there as well. Again, the courthouse may have more information in that area.

My Mitochondrial Family

I have been away from this blog for a while. I hope many of you have kept up with me over on Michigan Redneck II over on Wordpress. I have decided to continue with politics and news on the other site and use this site for ancestry and sewing updates.

For the title of the post. What is Mitochondrial DNA? Wikipedia has this;

In sexually reproducing organisms, mitochondria are normally inherited exclusively from the mother. The mitochondria in mammalian sperm are usually destroyed by the egg cell after fertilization. Also, most mitochondria are present at the base of the sperm's tail, which is used for propelling the sperm cells. Sometimes the tail is lost during fertilization. In 1999 it was reported that paternal sperm mitochondria (containing mtDNA) are marked with ubiquitin to select them for later destruction inside the embryo.^[10] Some in vitro fertilization techniques, particularly injecting a sperm into an oocyte, may interfere with this.

The fact that mitochondrial DNA is maternally inherited enables researchers to trace maternal lineage far back in time. (Y chromosomal DNA, paternally inherited, is used in an analogous way to trace the agnate lineage.) This is accomplished in humans by sequencing one or more of the hypervariable control regions (HVR1 or HVR2) of the mitochondrial DNA. HVR1 consists of about 440 base pairs. These 440 base pairs are then compared to the control regions of other individuals (either specific people or subjects in a database) to determine maternal lineage. Most often, the comparison is made to the revised. Vilà et al have published studies tracing the matrilineal descent of domestic dogs to wolves.^[11] The concept of the Mitochondrial Eve is based on the same type of analysis, attempting to discover the origin of humanity by tracking the lineage back in time.

Because mtDNA is not highly conserved and has a rapid mutation rate, it is useful for studying the evolutionary relationships - phylogeny - of organisms. Biologists can determine and then compare mtDNA sequences among different species and use the comparisons to build an evolutionary tree for the species examined.

Specific for my research in layman terms, I am studying from my mother to her mother to her mother and beyond.

Here is what I know. I will leave out names of living persons. So I will not mention my mother or maternal grandmother. Let's start with my maternal grandmother's mother was Dorothy (Nelson) Reimel Behnke.

Dorothy Nelson was born on July 26, 1900 in Wilmington, Illinois to Henry and Elizabeth Kallis Nelson. She married William Reimel, son of Michael and Katherine (Catherine) Shoemaker Reimel, on April 3, 1918 in Owosso. Officiating was Reverend D. Gale. Marriage information has been taken form marriage license. After becoming a widow, she married Edwin Behnke, of Durand in 1955.

Henry Nelson was probably born on April, 8 1861 in Denmark. Coming to the US sometime during the 1880s. The possible birthday deduced according to info on his death certificate and his stated age on his youngest son's (Carl) birth certificate. According to Henry's and Elizabeth's marriage certificate, Henry's father was Niels Powelson. In the early days, Danish surnames were decided by the given name of the person's father. That is why Henry's surname is Nelson. Technically according to this theory, his true surname is Nielsen; meaning Niel's son. But Nelson is the Americanized version of the name.
Elizabeth Kallis was born to Frank and Elizabeth Selinger Kallis in Diamond, Illinois on January 5, 1864. Possible birthday deduced according to information on her death certificate and youngest son's (Carl) birth certificate.
Henry and Elizabeth Nelson were married on April 21, 1890 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Illinois. Officiating the ceremony was Reverend Thomas S. Anderson. Information according marriage certificate.

Frank Kallis was born sometime during 1826 in Bohemia (current day Czech Republic). According to a distant cousin in South Dakota, Frank came from a town called Nosálov. He had a brother named Joseph, possible spelling Josef.
Elizabeth Selinger was born on May 5, 1835 in Bohemia, possibly in a town called Mšeno. According to Henry and Elizabeth Nelson's marriage certificate, "mother's maiden name Seliger." She did have a brother named Wenzel. Wenzel's address was Nassa del#11 Mšeno region Mělnik Bohemia. Possible parents' names were Wenzel and Lena.
Lena lived with Kallis family, in the 1880 census. According to the census info, spelling of given and surnames as Ellen Selezer. She was widowed at the time. I have found an immigration record of a Helena Seliger who was about the same age as my gggg grandmother. She arrived in 1863. Yet, in the 1870 census I can not find her.

Dorothy Nelson Reimel Behnke passed away on July 5, 1995 of a stroke at Owosso General Hostpital in Owosso Michigan. She is buried with both husbands, William Reimel and Edwin Behnke, in the cemetery in Vernon, Michigan. This is family information.
Henry Nelson passed away April 15, 1929 from obstruction of bowel in Durand, Michigan. He is buried with wife and sister-in-law, Emma Kallis at Oakwood Cemetery in Wilmington, Illinois Lot 42. Information taken from Henry's death certificate and family information.
Elizabeth Kallis Nelson passed away on June 20, 1909. Immediate cause was heart failure. She had suffered from Pulmonary Tuberculosis for 6 months. Attending physician was Wm. B. Welch. She is buried with husband and sister at Oakwood Cemetery in Wilmington, Illinois. Information taken from death certificate and family information.
Frank Kallis passed away on December 25, 1880 of unknown causes. He is buried somewhere in Illinois, possibly at a Catholic cemetery. Taken from family information.
Elizabeth Selinger Kallis passed away on April 4, 1918 in Wessington Springs, South Dakota. She is buried in Hope Cemetery in South Dakota. Taken from family information.
Lena/Ellen Selinger most likely passed away in Illinois and would most likely be buried in Illinois. Just an educated guess.

I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but I always get a melancholy feeling in regards to family, those living and those who have passed on. Y’all know I am into searching my Bohemian genealogy. On a complete fluke I found an answer to an inquiry I made to the town office of Mšeno, Czech Republic, one of my ancestor’s hometown. I was expecting an answer via email. When I did not receive an email, I gave up. I did not know that there was a q & a page. I found the q & a page while searching for something else. Right now, I need to do some translating, a few things that I need to follow up and talk to some contacts (such as write to my pen-pal in CR and re-initiate contact with cousins in CR). I am going to get back to writing and updating at the original Michigan Redneck about family, genealogy, cooking, sewing and other girly stuff. Don’t worry, I will continue to write here (at Michigan Redneck II) about politics, Czech news of interest to readers and other news of importance. Just right now, I feel there is something that I am searching for, just don’t know what it is. When I do know, I will let y’all know.

Mich. in jeopardy of losing out on federal highway dollars

DELTA TWP. - Some legislators and county officials fear the state is in jeopardy of losing federal highway money next year.

“It’s got to be a serious concern,” state Rep. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba, said between conference sessions at the County Road Association of Michigan’s annual highway conference in Delta Township.

Casperson serves on the state House Transportation Committee. Attendees made comments this morning concerning the state’s ability to make use of federal money in the new fiscal year, beginning in October.

Michigan Department of Transportation officials were not immediately available for comment.

The federal government is projected to send $1.3 billion to Michigan next year. But some are concerned about whether the state has sufficient money to match some of that funding.

Casperson said he is concerned about the state’s ability to match all of its projected federal dollars next year in part because of what the state expects to spend on transportation is relatively flat when compared with current spending.

“We’re kind of going in a backward trend,” he said. [more here]

Convicted Calif. Molester Jumps to Death

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A 52-year-old man jumped to his death from a Southern California courthouse balcony hours after being convicted of child molestation, authorities said.
Carlos Edward Tello was facing more than 20 years in prison when he jumped from a ninth-floor balcony of the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana Tuesday afternoon. A suicide note was tucked into his clothing, authorities said.

A jury in a Fullerton courtroom earlier Tuesday convicted Tello of repeatedly molesting a young girl between 1989 and 1994.

Deputy District Attorney Heather Brown tried to have Tello’s bail revoked and have him taken into custody immediately after the verdicts were announced. She said he was carrying a suicide note when he was arrested in 2006 in the case and that he might be in danger.

Superior Court Judge Greggory Prickett declined to revoke Tello’s bail, instead ordering him to return to the Fullerton courtroom by 4:30 p.m.

Just after 4 p.m. at the Santa Ana courthouse, an alarm sounded that someone had entered a restricted area, said Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.

A bailiff found Tello standing on the balcony and tried to wrestle him away from the edge, said police Cpl. Jose Gonzalez.

“He said, ‘Nobody’s stopping me,’” Amormino said, “and he jumped.”

Thoughts on Yesterday’s Super Tuesday

Last night I did some live blogging, along with other First Districters and Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis, on www.firstgopblogs.com. It was really fun. I was watching Glenn Beck and his panel on CNN Headline News and blogged about it. I stayed neutral on the Republican front regarding John McCain. I dissed a little on the Democrats. Since the First GOP Blog is a group blog of fellow Republicans, I held back a little and didn’t give my full thoughts on things. I did not feel it was right to talk about some things, so I will talk about them here.

Mike Huckabee conceded out of the race. Thus making John McCain the Republican nominee. As of last count John McCain has a delegate count of 1192. That is one more than the 1191 needed delegates to clinch the nomination. Today John McCain is expected to be at the White House, where President George W. Bush is expected to endorse John McCain. I am still not sure how to think of John McCain. I am not thrilled with the any of the Democrat choices. The thing is, Hill and Bar are just so freakin awful.

A part of me thinks about voting third party once the general election comes up. But then I think, what if too many Conservatives vote third party and Hill or Bar become the next president. Sometimes I think that maybe this would be a great wake-up call to the Republicans and it would be a great chance for us to re-group and bring the party back to it’s conservative principals. It would be a good four years to heal. But would the hurting that Hill or Bar be so permanent that the country could never heal? There needs to be a balance. I want to see the Republican party heal itself, but I don’t want to see the entire country get hurt in the process.

Rush Limbaugh talked about Republicans voting for Hillary in the Texas primary to keep her in the race and mess with the Democrats primary, since he is not a fan of John McCain. I get some of his points on why he said this. His feeling as that the longer the Democrats go without a sure nominee the more money that gets spent, from the campaigns and supporters of the campaigns and gives the DNC a shorter time to group up once they have a nom. There are some out there who want to see Hill become the Dem nom. They think that Hillary will be easiest for John McCain to beat.

While I left my support of Mike Huckabee, due to some things I read about him that I didn’t like, there is one thing I agree with him on. When I first supported Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama was just an after thought he said that Hillary Clinton would be a formidable candidate. He said not to underestimate her. Again, ya gotta admit, him living in Arkansas and seeing the “Clinton political machine” first hand. They even had a hand in Arkansas politics after leaving the state.

A part of me is seeing this Obama craze and thinking that maybe he would be harder for McCain to win against. But then I recall about how Mike Huckabee has said about how Hillary Clinton can be sneaky and using dirty tricks. I just don’t think Obama would be able to use dirty tricks, or at least not to the extent that Hillary would. Then I think to myself, why even bother thinking about this. I am not a fan of McCain.

I had heard people banter about Condoleeza Rice possibly running for president. Obviously that ain’t gonna happen for ‘08. I didn’t know too much about her when I heard this. I know who she is and I have followed up on her a little bit. But not to the extent that those who wanted to see her run has. I have just started really learning about her. She is a well accomplished lady. I think if enough people can talk her into it, she just may run in ‘12 or ‘16.

Here is the problem if Hill or Bar were to become president. Obviously Hillary is a woman. Obviously Barack is black. Obviously Condoleeza Rice is a black woman. From my point of view, if one of these two become president and messed up, I would say Hillary royally messed up because of who she is. Or I would say Barack royally messed up because of who he is. I judge people on their minds and actions. Unfortunately, there would be people out there who would say that that is why a woman and or black should not be president. This would mess up Condi’s chance.

I saw John McCain make his victory speech last night. His wife was standing beside him. She looked like an aging Barbie Doll. She looked plasticky like she had no personality. She had this closed lip perma grin. She looks so country clubby. Those clothes, jewelry and hair. I don’t know what it is about her, but I just can’t help but she just gives me chills. Everytime I see her, I can’t see the coloring in her eyes, looks like just white surrounded by too much black eye make-up. Creepy, if you ask me.

I just took off to take a snack break. Took longer than I thought. The long lost sunshine that is back in the UP brought people out and grocery lines. I am back. I kept the TV on when I came back Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes are on FOX News. They were talking to a Democrat Strategist. Remember the hullabaloo about Florida and Michigan holding there primaries early? And the DNC not allowing the Dems to campaign in these states? Well, this strategist is talking about how Michigan and Florida “almighty” Superdelegates will be important in deciding the Democrat nom.

I know, I know I am a Republican. Why am I talking anything about Dems? There isn’t much interesting going on on our side. Hill and Bar a close in delegates. Mac and Huck have a major delegate ratio between them. I am going to channel surf a bit and also see what Rush is talking about. I am wondering if Betty Ford Clinic has a wing for political addiction, argh.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Pro-life members of Congress say the federal government should stop funding Planned Parenthood through national family programs because its teen-oriented web site features pornography. Planned Parenthood’s online venture TeenWire features content so graphic that some Internet filters are preventing access to it.

The site is supposed to be a compendium of “medically accurate” information for teenagers on sexual issues.

Though Planned Parenthood is careful to say the information is intended for people 18 years and older, the web site is clearly geared to teens.

The web site’s “advice columnists” tell kids viewing the web site that many people use pornography as part of sex play.” A columnist tells one viewer that viewing pornography won’t lead to getting bad grades in school.

OK, this last paragraph really gets me worked up. I don’t know if pornography will cause bad grades or not. I don’t care if kids who view it get better grades. Which is something I highly doubt, but I digress. It will give kids a bad sense of what sex is. If they don’t already have a bad sense of it anyways. In fact, many adults are messed up about sex. I have never watched such stupid crap. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what is in porn. Boys will think that the nasty asty way girls act in these “movies” is the way that girls are supposed to be and expect this from girls. Girls will think this is the way they are supposed to act and that if they don’t act this way they won’t get a prom date or whatever. It will have a lasting effect on them, even into adulthood.

The web site encourages kids to play sexual games or explore bisexuality and it gives teens advice on how to avoid telling their parents about a possible abortion.

The first part is bad enough, but teaching children how to be sneaky about anything, especially on possibly ending the life of a human being is absolutely horrendous.

Leading pro-life groups agreed and say Planned Parenthood doesn’t need one-third of its income coming from the federal government. [more here]

First District Now Has it's Own Blog!

If you recall, a while back I said there was a group project in the works. Well it is official, Michigan First District GOP now has a blog. Here is the email announcement from Joel Westrom.

Teens Accused of Clubbing Disabled Young Woman

I had heard about this story on the Glenn Beck tv show from Friday. It is a sickening story about a teenage couple who broke into a home and clubbed a young lady in the head, along with other types of abusing her. From the Glenn Beck transcript;

I want to tell you a story about what happened Friday in a rural town in southwestern Ohio. Two teenagers broke into a house and hid in the basement. Their plan was to get up the next morning and steal the homeowner`s car. But it didn`t work out. So they did something much, much worse.

After realizing the only adult in the house had left for work the two went upstairs and found an 18-year-old girl sleeping. They woke her up and then for the next six hours, they tortured here. They used a baseball bat, they shaved off all of her hair, they doused her with water and made her walk barefoot in the snow. Despite her pleas that she just had brain surgery, they repeatedly hit her over to the head. By the way, she`s disabled.

The girl`s mother found her, bloodied, bruised, helpless later that night and the teenagers that did it were found minutes later in the woods nearby. They`re being charged now, if they were being charged as adults, they would only face eight to 28 years in prison. But they`re not being charged as adults. If it were up to me, these two dirt bags would never see the light of day again. Richard Jones is the sheriff of Ohio`s Butler County. And Wendy Murphy is a law professor at the New England School of Law and author of “And Justice for Some.”

I agree with Glenn on these brats never seeing the light of day, and the possible punishment is too short. But here is some good news from The Western Star of Ohio.

HAMILTON — Prosecutors have requested that a teen couple accused of terrorizing a disabled young woman at her Hanover Twp. home last week be tried as adults.

The 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl appeared in Butler County Juvenile Court Thursday, Feb. 28, on charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, felonious assault, kidnapping and vandalism in the attack of Ashley Clark.

Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Phillips said based on the severity of the charges and age of the accused offenders, he is requesting the cases be bound over to adult court. A hearing has been set for April 4.

Let me start with you, Richard, I have heard you quoted saying in 32 years you have never seen anything as bad as this?

RICHARD JONES, BUTLER COUNTY, OH, SHERIFF: Glenn, I have seen almost everything imaginable. That people can do that to other human beings and I have never seen anything such as this. It makes your throat swell up, it makes you have such emotion, that Ashley is the victim here, she`s 18 years old and she does have a disability.

Here’s the kicker, if you thought things couldn’t be worse, they have a kid!

JONES: I that have a two-month-old child themselves. It`s probably the best thing for the child that they not raise the child. Who knows what would happen with that child. If these two — it`s so unusual for two people from a different family to end up — usually in something like this, one person would have sympathy and say, please don`t do this, we need to stop this, this isn`t right. Both of them continued and went on with this rampage for hours.

This is proof that any idiot can reproduce. I know eugenics is supposed to be wrong, but I think in this case an exception can and should be made. Both these little brats should be forcibly sterilized. I hate to think how this kid is going to grow up.

Glenn says he can’t tell these kids names on the air. He says if they are tried as adults, come April 1, he will put their names and faces all over television. I found their names, here.

Wendy Murphy talks about how Ohio law works on whether or not to try teenagers as adults.

Wendy, in Ohio, you actually have to go to court and prove to the court that they should be tried as adults and not juvenile. Any doubt in your mind that that`s going to be able to be pulled off here in this case?

WENDY MURPHY, NEW ENGLAND SCHOOL OF LAW: No. What`s really unfortunate here, Glenn is that Ohio has it a bit backward compared to the trend in the rest of the country which is that for this aged group of juveniles, they`re very close to adult. They`ve got records, this crime is the most heinous for that category of juvenile, you should start off in adult court and in some states, they let the juveniles try to prove that they should be bumped back down to juvenile court which by the way would also never happen in a case like this.

Ohio should not have to bear the expense, taxpayer expense of having to prove that this case deserves to be in adult court.

Did you read that? These little brats even have a record. I hope like hell their kids are taken away.

Frances Rice, chairman of the National Black Republican Association, describes the Democratic Party as the architect of modern day racism.
Rice, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and lawyer, says in an interview it was Republicans who pushed through much of the ground-breaking civil rights legislation in Congress. Now, she says, Republicans stand for empowering blacks to help them out of poverty. In contrast, Rice says, the Democrats push to keep blacks dependent on government handouts and encourage them to see themselves as victims.

In Rice’s view, “The Democrats fight every effort of Republicans to get blacks out of poverty because they know that once blacks become prosperous, the Democratic Party will lose its power base.”

Rice co-founded the National Black Republican Association in 2005 with the mission of returning African-Americans to their Republican Party roots. Because co-founder Andre Cadogan knew Newsmax CEO and Editor in Chief Chris Ruddy, the first meeting of the organization took place at Newsmax offices in West Palm Beach, Fla. The organization has grown from five members to over a thousand members. It publishes a quarterly glossy magazine — The Black Republican — and has a Web site: www.nbra.info.

Aligning themselves with special interests, Rice says the Democrats are “fighting school-choice opportunity scholarships that are designed to get black children out of failing schools, because the teacher’s unions wants to maintain control over buildings.”

“Our philosophy in the Republican Party is to teach a person how to fish, so he can feed himself for a lifetime, whereas the Democratic Party’s philosophy is give a man a fish, so he can eat for a day,” Rice says.
Rice says most blacks are not aware that from its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party, the Republican Party has been at the “forefront of the struggle for civil rights, which is why Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican.”
It was Republicans, she notes, who fought to free blacks from slavery and amended the Constitution to grant blacks freedom, citizenship, and the right to vote. Republicans also pushed through much of the ground-breaking civil rights legislation in Congress from the 1860s through the 1960s, Rice says.

“It was the Democrat public safety commissioner, Eugene ‘Bull’ Connor, in Birmingham who let loose vicious dogs and turned the fire hoses on black civil rights demonstrators,” Rice says.

I recall back in the 2004 Presidential General Election the Democrats posted an ad in a magazine that has a high black readership, using pictures from such past incidents. Funny, they were trying to get blacks to vote against Republicans, of all things, using the slogan, "Don't let them do this again." In reality, it was the "them" that were Democrats.

Democrat Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox “brandished an ax handle to prevent blacks from patronizing his restaurant,” Rice says. “Democrat Alabama Governor George Wallace stood in front of the Alabama school house in 1963 and declared that there would be segregation forever. In 1954, it was Democrat Arkansas Governor Orville Faubus who tried to prevent the desegregation of Little Rock public schools. It was Republican President Dwight Eisenhower who sent the troops into the South to desegregate the schools and who appointed Chief Justice Earl Warren to the U.S. Supreme Court, which resulted in the 1954 Brown versus Board of Education decision.” [more here]

Raúl Castro Named Cuba’s New President

HAVANA — Raúl Castro, who has labored in the shadow of his brother Fidel since the days of the Cuban revolution, became the new president of the Communist island on Sunday, ending his brother’s 49-year rule, as well as speculation that a younger generation would take power.

Umm, just curious, how "young" is Raúl?

In his first words as president, Mr. Castro made it clear that any changes would be limited, promising to continue to consult his brother on every important decision. He said his brother was still alive and alert, and the time had yet to come when the leaders of the revolution in the 1950s had to pass the baton to a new generation.
“Fidel is Fidel, you know that well,” he said to the National Assembly shortly after it voted him president. “He is irreplaceable and the people will continue his work even though he is not physically here.”

Raúl Castro said the government needed to change to survive in the new era. He proposed putting more power in the hands of provincial governments and streamlining the bureaucracy in Havana. “Today a more compact structure is required,” he said.

A good change would be giving more power to the people.

Carlos Lage, a 56-year-old physician close to the elder Castro who engineered the economy after Soviet aid dried up in the 1990s, remains in the same role he had before, one of five vice presidents.

How many vice presidents do they need? Sounds like too many chiefs and not enough indians.

The ballot before the Assembly contained 31 names for the top positions in the country, among them president, minister of interior and minister of the armed forces. The delegates have no choice, since there is only one name for each position. The candidates were not immediately made public.

Perhaps the most important challenge facing the new president is the struggling economy. During his stint as acting president since 2006, Raúl Castro raised expectations among Cubans that he might act to make it easier to earn a decent salary within the state-run system.
He has criticized the miserly state salaries as insufficient, and encouraged more public debate about the country’s problems. He has called for more productive farms and spoken of “structural changes” that he said were needed to revitalize the economy. So far, however, he has not followed these promises with actions.

The National Assembly was chosen last month in elections completely controlled by the Communist party, the only political organization permitted on this island of 11 million people. [more here]

LUDINGTON, Mich. (AP) — At age 19, Mitchell Foster was easily the youngest delegate at the Michigan Republican Convention.
That didn't keep the Northern Michigan University freshman from enjoying himself at the event, held Feb. 15-16 in Lansing. He was selected to represent Marquette County based on his involvement with the county GOP and the university's Young Republicans.
"It was a blast," Foster told the Ludington Daily News for a story published Thursday. "It is an experience I will never forget." [more here]

"America has a dictator," Benito Mussolini proclaimed, watching FDR from abroad. He marveled at how the forces of "spiritual renewal" on display in the New Deal were destroying the outdated notion that democracy and liberalism were "immortal principles." "Roosevelt is moving, acting, giving orders independently of the decisions or wishes of the Senate or Congress. ... A sole will silences dissenting voices." That almost sounds like Harry Reid talking about Bush.

Mussolini reviewed FDR's book, Looking Forward proclaiming the author a kindred spirit. The way Roosevelt "calls his readers to battle," he wrote, "is reminiscent of the ways and means by which fascism awakened the Italian people." "Without question," he continued, the "sea change" in America "resembles that of fascism." Indeed, the comparisons were so commonplace, Mussolini's press office banned the practice. "It is not to be emphasized that Roosevelt's policy is fascist because these comments are immediately cabled to the United States and are used by his foes to attack him."

The German press adored FDR. In 1934, the Vlkischer Beobachter, the Nazi Party's official newspaper, described Roosevelt as a man of "irreproachable, extremely responsible character and immovable will" and a "warm-hearted leader of the people with a profound understanding of social needs." Hitler sent FDR a letter celebrating his "heroic efforts" and "successful battle against economic distress." Hitler informed the U.S. ambassador, William Dodd, that New Dealism was also "the quintessence of the German state philosophy."

The New Dealers were not so much mimicking the Soviet Union, Fascist Italy or Nazi Germany. They were attempting to recreate what they had built -up under Woodrow Wilson's war socialism. Today we have no historical memory of how brutal the Wilson Administration was, nor do we realize that many Progressives supported the war not so much because they championed its foreign policy aims, but because they yearned for the "social possibilities of war," in the words of John Dewey, the 20th century's premier political philosopher.

The war provided an opportunity to force Americans to, as journalist Frederick Lewis Allen put it, "lay by our good-natured individualism and march in step." Or as another progressive put it, "Laissez faire is dead. Long live social control."

It was this spirit which informed FDR's administration. By 1944 he made good on Wilson's conviction that the US constitution was outmoded and in need of replacing with a new "living constitution." FDR's proposed innovation was a new "economic bill of rights" which included:

>The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation.

>The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment.

>The right of every family to a decent home.

>The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation.

You read correctly, the right to 'recreation'.

With the intellectuals on their side, Wilson recruited journalist George Creel to become a propaganda minister as head of the newly formed Committee on Public Information (CPI).

Mr. Creel declared that it was his mission to inflame the American public into "one white-hot mass" under the banner of "100 percent Americanism." Fear was a vital tool, he argued, "an important element to be bred in the civilian population."

The CPI printed millions of posters, buttons, pamphlets, that did just that. A typical poster for Liberty Bonds cautioned, "I am Public Opinion. All men fear me!... [I]f you have the money to buy and do not buy, I will make this No Man's Land for you!"

Meanwhile, the CPI released a string of propaganda films with such titles as "The Kaiser," "The Beast of Berlin," and "The Prussian Cur." Remember when French fries became "freedom fries" in the run-up to the Iraq war? Thanks in part to the CPI, sauerkraut become "victory cabbage."

Under the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918, Wilson's administration shut down newspapers and magazines at an astounding pace. Indeed, any criticism of the government, even in your own home, could earn you a prison sentence. One man was brought to trial for explaining in his own home why he didn't want to buy Liberty Bonds.

The Wilson administration sanctioned what could be called an American fascist, the American Protective League. The APL - a quarter million strong at its height, with offices in 600 cities - carried government-issued badges while beating up dissidents and protesters and conducting warrantless searches and interrogations. Even after the war, Wilson refused to release the last of America's political prisoners, leaving it to subsequent Republican administrations to free the anti-war Socialist Eugene V. Debs and others.

The left claims that president Bush seeks to do something like this with the war on terror. But look at the evidence. No newspapers closed down, a sum total of three detainees water-boarded, two hard core terrorists who happen to be American citizens have had their habeus corpus rights "infringed." After 9/11 President Bush asked the American people to go shopping, not to give up capitalism.

Meanwhile, on the left, self-styled progressives keep trying to recreate the New Deal and the progressive era. New York Times columnist pines for a "new progressive era." Barack Obama gushed about how he was re-dedicating his campaign at the University of Wisconsin where the Progressive movement was born. Hillary says she's not a liberal but a "modern progressive."

Now, obviously, none of the current crop of self-described progressives are eager to replay the darkest chapters of the past. But we make a mistake when we assume that we can cherry pick only the good parts of our past to re-create.

Something is missing in all the intramural debates among different stripes of Republicans this primary season.
Bigger-government Republicans don't seem fully to appreciate the extent to which the differences between conservative Republicans and liberals are about more than policy.
Conservatives and liberals differ not merely over the level of taxation, protection of the unborn, immigration, the war and other issues — though the importance of these disputes cannot easily be overstated.

Admittedly, conservatives view these policy differences as matters of great urgency...

But at an even more fundamental level, conservatives, being sentimental saps, believe — apparently unlike Michelle Obama — that the United States is not only the greatest nation in the world but also that it owes its greatness largely to its Constitution.
Even if liberals were to concede this point, they would probably have different reasons for believing it is so...

They're definitely all about the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures — to such an extreme that they would extend it to non-citizen enemy combatants...

Conservatives, by contrast, not only champion the Bill of Rights — the complete package — but also believe Americans owe our unique liberties to the scheme of governmental power established in the body of the Constitution.
We believe, as did the framers, that the structural limitations on government, like the separation of powers and federalism, are what make possible individual liberties...

That's why conservatives get so exercised about appellate judges who refuse to honor the Constitution as written and insist on rewriting its provisions from the bench...

...they understand that expansive government and socialism — no matter how well meaning, in some cases — are ultimately incompatible with individual liberties.

Big government Republicans, however, evidently don't have the same distrust of governmental power, believing it is an unstoppable force that can't be beaten and so must be joined and harnessed to "conservative" ends.
No matter how smart these intellectuals are, they just don't get it...

Conservatives realize that politics (and the preservation of our liberties) ain't beanbag. They don't invest their future in the platitudes of "hope," "bipartisanship," or "kumbaya."...

Instead, conservatives believe that government is a necessary evil to establish order and promote the common defense and the like but otherwise must be restrained in order to unleash the power and freedom of the individual.
Conservatives should not be underestimated as mere players in a cynical chessboard game of party politics. They believe in the power of ideas and will continue to promote their ideas irrespective of the eventual identity of the respective presidential nominees and regardless of how much they are pressured to be silent about first principles... Y'all know that I consider myself more of a Conservative than a Republican. This is why I am so passionate about certain issues. I am more of an economic Conservative than anything else. Which would explain why, even though I am pro-life, I am more concerned about immigration issues and welfare reform. While Mr. Limbaugh does talk about pro-life in his article, I left those out because as a member of the "working poor" I am more affected by illegal immigration and welfare than pro-life.
